A preview of mobile blogging
Much of blogging’s popularity has been achieved in just the last half-decade, and yet we’re already on the verge of a new revolution. With the advancing capabilities of mobile phones and pervasiveness of wireless Internet connections, it’s becoming easier and more popular to blog away from the computer.
One of the things that has made blogging so popular is that it gives you the ability to provide commentary on the things you see and hear — you can say what you think, and you don’t need to worry about writing for a specific audience in the way a traditional newspaper or TV station would.
The next logical step, then, would be to take your blog with you everywhere you go, and what better way to do that than to blog from your phone? With more capable phones becoming available, this is gaining a lot of popularity. Blogger offers a way to post to your blog via both email and picture messaging, and other services offer similar functionality for other sites.
For almost any blogging service you may use, there’s a way to mobile blog. Even services that don’t have any mobile blogging options can be used through third-party services.
Blogger
For Blogger, you can set up Blogger Mobile just by sending a message to go@blogger.com from your phone, and they’ll reply with steps for setting it up with your blog. If your phone doesn’t support picture messaging (my fellow iPhone users*) Blogger offers another handy service called Mail-to-Blogger that lets you send in posts with email.
TypePad
If you’re using TypePad for your blog, Six Apart has released several mobile blogging clients to post from. If you have a Palm, Windows Mobile, Symbian phone, BlackBerry, or an iPhone, there’s a TypePad Mobile application available for you. These applications allow you to write and edit posts from your phone, and in many cases allow you to post pictures from your phone’s camera.
Lots of others
There’s another service, called CellSpin, that offers a whole lot more variety. In addition to supporting hundreds of phones, it also supports several additional services. With CellSpin, you can post to LiveJournal, Twitter, Pownce, Windows Live Spaces, and others via text messaging from your phone. You can also write posts using email from a computer or any phone that cam send email.
While none of these blogging applications can provide an experience as fully-featured as you’d get on an actual computer, some of them get really close. But all of them support the most basic feature–blogging–and that’s really why you’re running a blog. With mobile blogging, you can be sure to post what you want, when you want.
